The Road is inspired by mounting Cold- War tensions and the
constant fear of a nuclear explosion. Cold-War
McCarthy was influenced heavily by satirical horror films
such as: ‘The Hills Have Eyes’, ‘Dawn of the Dead’ and ‘Last House on the
Left’, evidence of this can be seen throughout the book. Horror
Throughout the book
McCarthy has the man and boy cling to elements of humanity, for instance the
cart they push around and the boy’s first coca-cola. Humanity
In the first paragraph the man reaches “out to touch the
child sleeping beside him”, this emphasises to the reader that death and danger
surrounds the two characters. Death
McCarthy uses limited punctuation throughout the book to
show that the story is a mass of combined elements; furthermore it reinforces
the slip and descent from humanity that the boy and man are witnessing.
